we were lucky to get to spend this past grandparent’s day with the family. We made sure to make a couple crafts for each house to make up for the past years.

Baking Ceramic Mugs

We were fortunate enough to get to spend this grandparent’s day in the same town as them. Being a military child, G doesn’t get to spend a whole lot of time with them. We took full advantage of that and filled both of their houses with crafts and memories.

We started off with these awesome mugs. I bought cheap white mugs at the Dollar Tree. The cheaper the better, mugs have this shiny coat on them that doesn’t allow the marker to set inside the ceramic well. The more expensive mugs usually have more of the shiny coat, so it’s easier for the market to set on a cheaper mug.
G picked out he colors and sayings, I wrote them on. These first two mugs we used Elmers glue Painters Style markers. Drew on our designs and baked them at 350°F for 45 minutes, let them cool, and repeated the process.

For the next two we used Sharpies, and did the same process. Baked at 350°F for 45 minutes, twice.

DO NOT preheat your over before placing the mugs inside. Put the mugs in first and then turn the oven on. Same process when they’re done baking. Let them cool off with the oven instead of pulling them out immediately. The strong temperature changes can crack the ceramic, so I kept them in the oven as long as possible.
